Today was a good day. Though these kids at the IHNFA are still super exhausting! It’s so weird because I’m used to being mentally exhausted all the time from the all the school and work and stress I usually have from that. Here, I’m not being intellectually challenged at all, but having enough energy to be around the kids all the time is tiring in a totally different way and I’m not used to it. It’s hard being at the IHNFA all day with kids and then coming back to the Hogar at night with tons more kids. And all of them want to play!
I feel like I’m starting to understand a bit more of conversations though which is nice. I still can’t conjugate verbs quickly enough to make proper sentences, but that will come with time I hope. And I started automatically counting in Spanish today when checking to make sure all the playing cards were there!! So that was cool J I didn’t even notice at first.
I also got to see where these kids at the IHNFA actually live too. It was awful. Tiny little shacks with just a piece of tin roofing to mark the spot for the kitchen. The space is tiny for the amount of kids in each family. They’re surrounded by garbage everywhere and they just burn it when it builds up- but there’s always a coating of trash on the ground all around. They also have to walk a ton up some steep steep parts- they basically live on the sides of mountains. It took us about a half hour to walk to the girl’s house that we did today. And there was a little 3 year old with us who couldn’t keep up. His sister was trying to drag him but it wasn’t really working so she asked me to take him. By the time we reached the top I was exhausted from carrying him and hiking at the same time. I can’t believe the families do it every single day.
We also played some sort of kickball/baseball combination today. It’s interesting trying to figure out the rules down here haha. I was so disgustingly sweaty by the end of it cause it was really hot today. The cold shower didn’t feel quite as bad tonight. Alright, that’s all for now. J
